Kids around us are surrounded by screens – from smartphones and tablets to computers and televisions which makes very difficult for us to keep our kids away. While technology offers countless benefits, excessive screen time can have detrimental effects on a child’s physical health, mental well-being, and overall development. Here are some ways to help reduce the ‘Screen time’ for kids:1. Create a Weekly Schedule:Create a daily or weekly schedule outlining when screens are allowed and for how long. Make sure these guidelines are taken into account with extracurricular activities.2. The Outdoor Play:Create opportunities for the kids to explore nature, play sports, ride bikes, or simply run around in the fresh air. Outdoor play not only reduces screen time but also promotes physical fitness and mental well-being.3. The Alternative Activities:Encourage hobbies such as reading, drawing, playing musical instruments, or building with blocks. Engaging in hands-on activities not only reduces reliance on screens but also fosters creativity and critical thinking skills.4. Create Self Examples:Limit your own screen use, especially during family time, and prioritize face-to-face interactions. Show your kids the importance of disconnecting from screens and engaging in meaningful activities.5. The Wise Screen Time:When phone is allowed, encourage educational and interactive content rather than passive consumption. Choose high-quality apps, games, and TV shows that promote learning and skill development. Co-view or co-play with the kid to make screen time a shared and enriching experience.7. The Family Time:Designate specific times of the day or week as tech-free periods for the entire family. Use this time to engage in activities such as family meals, reading books aloud, or playing board games together. Creating tech-free rituals helps break the habit of constant screen use.We at Mentoring Minds Counsellors always believe that by implementing these practical methods consistently and fostering a supportive environment, parents can help their kids develop healthy screen habits and enjoy a more balanced childhood.Share this:TwitterFacebookLikeLoading…
