The Deleted Memory

Life is a series of moments some we hold close forever, others that quietly fade away, slipping into the shadows of our mind. We often talk about “forgetting” as if our brain simply deletes a file, like hitting trash on a computer. But memory doesn’t quite work like that. It’s more mysterious, more selective, and sometimes more merciful than we realize.

Why Memories Disappear

Every memory we make is stored through a network of brain cells, connected by chemical and electrical signals. But over time, those connections can weaken. Just like a path in the woods disappears if no one walks on it, a memory that’s never recalled can fade until it’s no longer accessible.

This “deletion” isn’t always bad it’s actually our brain’s way of making room for what’s important right now. Imagine if you remembered every single detail of every day; your mind would be cluttered beyond function. Forgetting helps us focus on what matters in the present.

The Emotional Filter

Not all memories are treated equally. Our brain has an emotional filter moments tied to strong feelings (love, fear, joy, grief) are stored more vividly. That’s why you might remember your first heartbreak or the smell of your grandmother’s kitchen, even after decades. Meanwhile, neutral moments like what you had for lunch two weeks ago fade away quickly.

Trauma and the Mind’s Defense

Sometimes, memories aren’t just lost they’re locked away. In cases of trauma, the brain can “shelve” certain experiences to protect us from emotional overload. These memories may resurface unexpectedly triggered by a smell, a sound, or even a dream but until then, they remain hidden in the depths of the mind.

Can We Get Them Back?

Some forgotten memories can be revived. Looking at an old photo, hearing a familiar song, or visiting a childhood place can bring back details you thought were gone forever. Others, however, are truly gone like pages ripped from a diary.

The Beauty of Forgetting

While it can be frustrating to lose pieces of our past, forgetting is also a gift. It allows us to heal from pain, move forward, and create space for new experiences. After all, life isn’t meant to be an endless archive it’s meant to be lived, here and now.

We at Mentoring Minds Counsellors believe that in the end, deleted memories are a reminder that we are constantly evolving. We may not remember every step we’ve taken, but each one has shaped who we are today even the ones we can’t recall.
